Native to the Philippines, Frydek is a collector’s favourite thanks to its dark, velvet-textured leaves traced with sharp white veins. It feels instantly sophisticated. Its more art piece than houseplant and works beautifully in modern, minimal spaces where the contrast can really shine. It brings structure to leafy green collections and looks striking against soft neutrals or light woods.

A few house rules...

Frydek loves bright, indirect light. Its used to growing beneath taller trees in the tropics, where the sun is filtered through leaves above. Too much direct sunlight will mark its velvety surface, but too little and it will slow down, producing smaller leaves. A bright, softly lit spot suits it best.

Check the top few centimetres of soil and water when they start to feel dry. It enjoys moisture but not wet feet, so make sure the pot drains well. Coming from humid forests, it appreciates regular misting or being grouped with other plants to keep the air slightly moist.
