Chelsea Flower Show: Behind The Gold Medal🏅

What inspired the concept for the show?

We spend a lot of time talking to customers who live in small city flats and feel like they do not have enough space for plants. That conversation became the heart of our idea. Upcycled Botanica: Making Small Spaces Beautiful was our way of showing that you can create a green sanctuary wherever you live. You do not need a garden or a huge budget, just imagination and a willingness to experiment.

Bringing that idea to life

We started by looking at everyday objects and asking how we could give them new life. A coffee table became a terrarium. A sofa grew moss cushions. Air plants became chess pieces on an upcycled chessboard made from a large piece of tile. We transformed what would normally be thrown away into something living and full of character. Every material had a purpose. We used bamboo, driftwood, sustainable moss and peat free soil. Even the tiny decorations inside our terrariums were sculptures made in Kenya from ocean plastic by an incredible charity called Ocean Sole.

The biggest challenges in preparing for Chelsea

Keeping the plants healthy before the show was a real test. We had to buy them early enough to match the list we submitted in our application but also keep them looking perfect for weeks. Our shop slowly turned into a holding space for plants and half finished DIY pieces, with customers constantly asking to buy our exhibition plants. Eventually we had to partition off a third of the store just to fit everything.

Transport was another major challenge. Our concept was incredibly labour intensive, with hundreds of small details and heavy pieces that needed to be built on site, cutting into our preparation time once we arrived at Chelsea. Getting everything there safely, without a single scratch, was stressful from start to finish.

What was build week like?

Intense but unforgettable. The showground felt like a temporary city filled with cranes, flowers, plants and people working around the clock. We were building, adjusting and cleaning for hours every day, but the energy was incredible. When the final piece went in and everything looked exactly as we had imagined for months, the sense of relief was indescribable.

Visitor response

People loved that everything had a story. We filmed ourselves making most of the pieces so visitors could scan QR codes and watch tutorials on how to recreate them at home. The codes were scanned constantly. Many people told us they felt inspired to look differently at what they already owned. Seeing visitors connect with the ideas of upcycling and small space design was the most rewarding part of the entire week.

The moment we won Gold

We thought the medals would be handed out during the day, so when we walked in that morning and saw everyone smiling at us, we were completely confused. Then we noticed the Gold medal already hanging on our exhibit. It was so surreal! Half of the team wasnt even scheduled to come in until mid morning so we had the pleasure of calling them to let them know the amazing news.

Personal takeaway

Creativity and care can completely transform the way we live. You do not need a large home to feel surrounded by nature. Plants change the atmosphere of a room and the way you feel in it. Building Upcycled Botanica reminded us why we started Plant Warehouse in the first place — to make greenery accessible, personal and joyful for everyone.
