If you like the look of a rubber plant but want something lighter, this is it. The White Rubber Plant or Ficus Tineke has those same broad, glossy leaves, just broken up with soft green and cream variegation that lifts a room rather than weighing it down.

It works well where a standard ficus might feel a bit heavy. You still get that strong, structured shape, just with more contrast and a cleaner feel. New growth often comes through slightly pink before settling, which adds a bit of movement over time.

It’s also fairly straightforward to look after once it’s settled. Give it a good spot and a consistent routine and it will quietly get on with it.

A few house rules...

Light

This plant thrives in bright, indirect light but also tolerates medium light. A little soft morning sun is fine, but avoid strong afternoon rays. Turn it every so often so it keeps that even, upright shape.
Watering

• Water when the top few centimetres of soil feel dry
• Give a good soak and allow excess to drain away. Never allow it to sit in water
• Water less often during cooler months
• Wipe the leaves now and then to keep them glossy
