Calathea makoyana is one of the most eye-catching foliage plants you can bring home. Its leaves look painted, with soft green tops and deep purple undersides that show themselves every time the leaves gently lift and lower throughout the day. A few house rules...

Light

Calatheas love gentle, indirect light. Too much sun will bleach out their pattern, so think dappled light or a bright room where the sun doesn’t hit them directly. They can also be a good option for shadier corners that still get some ambient brightness.
Watering

Keep the soil lightly moist, never bone-dry
• Use filtered or rainwater if possible, they can be fussy with tap water
• Mist occasionally or place near a humidifier
• Cut back slightly in winter when growth slows
