Acer palmatum, often known as Japanese maple, is an easy way to introduce colour and softness to patios, balconies and gardens. Its finely shaped, hand like leaves create a light, layered look that feels elegant without being overly formal. Depending on the variety, foliage can shift through the seasons, starting fresh in spring before deepening into richer tones as the year progresses.

Despite its delicate appearance, this is a long living plant that becomes more characterful with time. It works particularly well in containers, where its natural shape can be appreciated up close. As the seasons change, it brings movement and subtle colour that makes outdoor spaces feel more considered.

A few house rules...

Light

A bright, sheltered spot is ideal. Acer palmatum prefers gentle morning or late afternoon sun rather than strong midday light, which can scorch the leaves. It also benefits from protection from strong winds, as the foliage is delicate.

Watering

Keep the soil evenly moist, especially when grown in pots. Water when the top layer of soil begins to dry out, ensuring excess water can drain away freely. Avoid allowing the plant to sit in waterlogged compost

Important Info

Acer palmatum is deciduous, meaning it will lose its leaves in winter. This is completely normal and part of its natural cycle. Fresh new growth will appear again in spring, often stronger and fuller each year.
