Rhipsalis, or mistletoe cactus, is a unique, trailing succulent with slender, branching stems that make it an ideal choice for hanging planters. Native to rainforests in Central and South America, Africa, and some islands in the Indian Ocean, it thrives in more humid, shady environments than typical cacti. This genus is fascinating for its adaptability, growing as an epiphyte in its natural habitat.

A few house rules...

Light

Rhipsalis prefers bright, indirect light or dappled shade. It naturally grows under the canopy of trees, so it’s happy in spots too soft for desert cacti. Avoid super harsh direct sun, which can scorch its stems.

Watering

• Water when the top layer of soil has dried out
• Soak thoroughly, then allow excess to drain
• Likes higher humidity than most cacti
• Reduce watering through winter

Important Info

• Moderate grower indoors
• Trails up to 1.5 metres with age
• Non-toxic and pet safe
• It’s the only cactus found naturally outside the Americas, growing in Africa and Sri Lanka as well as Central and South America
