Tillandsia cyanea, often called the Pink Quill, is grown for that striking blush pink flower spike that sits neatly above soft arching green leaves. It looks considered and sculptural without feeling showy, which is why it works so well on shelves, side tables and desks. The pink quill holds its colour for months and slowly produces small purple flowers before the plant focuses on growing new pups at the base.

This is a bromeliad, so it behaves slightly differently to most houseplants. It grows in compost but also absorbs moisture through its leaves, which is why it appreciates brighter spaces and a bit of humidity. It is a great option if you want colour without going down the traditional flowering route.

A few house rules...

Light

Bright light suits this plant best. A spot near a window is ideal as long as the sun is not harsh. Too much direct sun can scorch the leaves, but low light will dull the colour of the quill and slow growth.

Watering

Water little and often rather than soaking. Keep the compost lightly moist and avoid letting the plant sit in water. Pour water gently into the centre of the plant as well as the soil, then allow any excess to drain away.
