The Opuntia is the kind of plant that makes a room instantly feel cooler. With its flat, sculptural pads and unmistakable silhouette, it brings a little desert energy without making your home feel like a themed Airbnb.

Native to the Americas, Opuntias love light, so give yours the sunniest spot you have. They’re incredibly low maintenance too. Let the soil dry out completely between waterings and, if in doubt, leave it alone. This is one plant that would much rather be forgotten about than fussed over.

Style it somewhere its shape can really stand out. We love it against a plain wall, on a sideboard or mixed into a more minimal space where it can do its thing.

Just a heads up: those tiny spines can be deceptively prickly, so keep it somewhere away from curious hands and paws.

Light

Bright light is essential. It thrives in direct sun and is happiest on a sunny windowsill with several hours of light each day.
Watering

Water sparingly. Allow the compost to dry out completely between waterings, then give a light drink. In winter, watering should be minimal.
