Hoya carnosa is the houseplant that keeps on giving. Its thick, waxy leaves store water, making it forgiving if you forget to water. Over time it trails or climbs, rewarding patience with clusters of star-shaped, sweetly scented flowers that look like porcelain. It’s a classic for a reason and deserves a spot where you can let those vines tumble down or wind up a support.

A few house rules...

Hoya carnosa thrives in bright, indirect light and can handle some gentle morning sun. In medium light it will still grow, but flowering is less likely. Too much direct sun can scorch the fleshy leaves.

• Water when the top half of the soil feels dry
• Give it a deep soak, then let it drain well
• Prefers a chunky, airy mix with bark or perlite
• Reduce watering in winter when growth slows

• Vines can reach several metres indoors
• Non-toxic and pet safe
• Hoya carnosa has been grown indoors for over 200 years and is one of the oldest documented houseplants in cultivation
